review 1: I thought this would be a look into my family's past. ( my mother came here in the early 60's) But I was really torn between trying to like the main character, she was whiny and I know she was a kidnaped hostage but I wanted her to be stronger. (But I don't know how I would have handled it so I can't say much) But it was a very good read. And I was very happy with her writing style. I am looking forward to her other book.
review 2: I could not put this book down and devoured its 700 pages in just a few days. I remember watching her release on TV, very moved to see her reunited with her children. Still, it's only now, knowing what she had had to endure for 6,5 years before that, that I can truly understand what a special and unlikely moment that was. The book pa
... moreinted a vivid picture of her life as a prisoner in the jungle, entirely dependent on her ever-changing commanders and guards. It is her side of the story and I'm aware of the controversy that surrounds the book. However, to me it read like an honest account of human nature in a place where the conventions we're used to nolonger apply. less

Inspiring.I heard about this book while listening to a BBC Podcast one day and the review of the book while mostly positive did hint to the fact that Ms Betancourt was a little full of herself. If I were to survive six and a half years in captivity, I would be full of myself as well. Where many people would have given up, she found a courage to live on despite whatever the FARC did to make life difficult for her.A long read but well worth it.

Badly written. In grammar, as well as sentence structure, logic and overall structure of the story. But this could be due to the Dutch translation. Besides this it is a story written by and about a woman who seems very full of herself, egocentrical and generally not a very likable person. I am sorry if I offend anyone.I can not recommend this book to anyone. Well maybe if you're very religious and French or Colombian...

Very insightful, although too long and repetition of similar events...still amazing story to read!

The last 100 pages flew. I always recommend a book that makes me tear up.
