review 1: The book was very very repetitive. Over and over again he leaves and returns, leaves and returns. There was some insight into the Amish culture and religion, and I think on the whole he was fair and a reliable narrator, but I think it could have stood a good edit, or maybe should be more of an essay or short story than a full-length book. I didn't like the really religious tone at the very end - although I guess I should have seen it coming.

... morehe last chapter to see the resolution of the author's anguishing push and pull. I would almost recommend reading ahead, because it gets dull and repetitive at points. This is a fundamentally touching story and important theological reflection that really deserves a rewrite with a tighter plot arch, better research, and more targeted descriptions of key scenes. less
