review 1: The book was very very repetitive. Over and over again he leaves and returns, leaves and returns. There was some insight into the Amish culture and religion, and I think on the whole he was fair and a reliable narrator, but I think it could have stood a good edit, or maybe should be more of an essay or short story than a full-length book. I didn't like the really religious tone at the very end - although I guess I should have seen it coming.
review 2: I rated the book based on the writing quality, but would actually highly recommend it to anyone interested in a truthful description of Amish life written for an outsider audience. I didn't intend to read my first two Amish lit books about leaving the community, since it's very rare, but it was worth reading for t... morehe last chapter to see the resolution of the author's anguishing push and pull. I would almost recommend reading ahead, because it gets dull and repetitive at points. This is a fundamentally touching story and important theological reflection that really deserves a rewrite with a tighter plot arch, better research, and more targeted descriptions of key scenes. less
