review 1: Byrne's "Best Friends and Bastards" has been done before, but the author outdoes over half of her competing authors on a love scorned and regained story. Angie Romeo seems to have an idyllic life, with a super successful husband, apartment on the beach, all the money she could dream of, and a job she loves. However, something's missing. The fact that she can't conceive is a burden she can't seem to overcome. When her best friend, who sleeps around and doesn't care for family, finds that she is pregnant, Angie's world is shaken. While trying to hide the little green monster burning inside of her, she invites her best friend to go on a trip to Bali with her. Upon arrival, she notices a connection between her husband and best friend that seems a little suspicious. The mysteri... moreous stranger she comes in contact with doesn't help matters, as she is drawn into a passion she hasn't felt in years in one night. A life that once seemed certain is now confusing and unsettling.3.5/5 stars.
review 2: Jaci Byrne has crafted a thoroughly enjoyable tale in "Best Friends and Bastards". She writes with confidence and authority and has fashioned characters you come to care about as the twist and turns of this interesting comedy-drama-romance unfold. The author obviously has a great sense of humor and she uses it to great effect quite often during the course of the story. After reading this book I guarantee you will never again be able to listen to Steve Miller's "The Joker" without at least cracking a smile. less
