review 1: The author's first book is one of my top five favorites. I didn't expect this book to live up to that but it didn't even come close. The history was very interesting and I did find myself gasping at several parts. However, it was a book that was easy to put down and hard to pick back up. When I did, I found it hard to truly feel for the characters. I'm looking forward to seeing what Mr. Ford's next book brings.
review 2: I enjoyed this new book from talented writer Jamie Ford. The story of young William Eng was both touching and heartbreaking. The boy who has been raised mostly in an orphanage comes across his mother, who has become a famous actress, at the theater on a field trip. We then learn the journey of how they each got to this place in their lives.
... more I enjoyed the time periods and setting, and found it to be a poignant story. less
