review 1: The story concept was good, guy and girl secretly fall in love, he leaves for the war, she's left behind to hope he returns. It also gave a tiny picture into how difficult it was for people to live during the period right after the Civil War. Families were torn apart and left with nothing and the male population drastically reduced. There were some glaring errors that should have been corrected such as incorrect dates and using the wrong person's name and misspellings. I didn't find this under Christian romance but I understand it's classified as such which was surprising since the majority of the book was based on deceit. The characters were just blah. There were too many villains, the H and h were apart way too long and plenty of weak females. Wouldn't recommen... mored it.
review 2: The writer hooked me right away with this story. It begins just prior to the civil war. Instead of the typical historical romance scenario with a female lead in distress, Wright starts off with young Rafe Colton in dire straits because his family land has been auctioned off and he’s lost it all. How will he survive? That kept me turning pages. The villain in this is his true love’s father who is already very wealthy but will stop at nothing to increase his holdings. Rafe falls in love with his daughter and the only means for support he can think of is to join the Confederate Army. They marry but keep it secret but their chance at happiness is thwarted when Rafe’s military orders keep him separated from his wife.Though it has good characters, and great historical details (I learned a few things I didn’t know about injustices in the South during that time), I felt the book sagged due to plodding pacing and continual frustration caused by keeping the two main characters apart. I give it 3 out of 5 stars, mainly for this reason. less
