review 1: Woah way to just reskin batman. Like why was there no effort made to make the setting different in any way from batman. Interesting ideas in there somewhere though, I just feel like the world has psychoanalyzed the poor man bat enough. I mean every revelation you could have about the guy has already been done about 100 times. Yeah we get it he's more batman than Bruce Wayne, yeah we get it he's just as crazy as the crazy people he locks up, yeah we get it hes super repressed sexually and gets his kicks through violence. Been there done that over and over again. I did enjoy myself while reading it though. The glitzy art and goofy characters made the experience worth the hour I spent with the book. And by goofy characters I mean everyone but 'batman' that dude is the boring ... morenadir of the series thus far.Big complaint though, why is the series called sex? I mean there's sex in the book certainly, but the sex does nothing to inform the narrative or build the characters. It would be like calling clockwork orange something like 'suspenders'. Everyone wears em, everyone's got their own preference of em, but they have just about fuck all to do with the story or the themes or the character development. Like maybe if each character treated sex the way the treat the rest of the world the title would make sense and inform the reader about the nature of the character. I mean it kinda looks like that's what Casey is going for. Batman is repressed , so he's sexually repressed. The old man is mean, so he has mean sex. The young vigilante is righteous so he likes things consensual. Cat woman is sexy and smart so she... Is a pimp? The riddler is a prank addict so he... Has sex with prostitutes? The twin dudes are creepy... So they're gay? See how thungs just fall apart there? I just don't get the title, i didn't even think the book was going to be a superhero book when I picked it up. I honestly thought it was going to be About sex, not some superhero retread with sex stapled on.
review 2: There is "slow burn" -- and then there is this comic. After eight issues (all collected in this book) we've only scratched the surface: we have gotten an introduction to this world and met some of the players, but any action has been only served as an introduction. An intro to a much larger story that hopefully will really kick off soon. Which explains my score; sure, there is plenty of intrigue and promise, but whether that will pay off... I really feel that this could and should have been further along by now.As for the provocative title, yes, the comic delivers on that promise repeatedly but that merely makes it an adult comic, not porn. The sex is part of the story and the characters, and not just gratuitous titillation. less
