review 1: Strong resemblence to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, with a female protagonist and a larger group of social outcasts. They travel down the Sabine River (more likely one of its forks) in East Texas to Gladewater, with plans to hop on a bus and travel to Hollywood. Although the setting seems to be in 1930s or 1940s, there's a timeless quality about the river bottoms and the characters' dilemmas. The best part of the book are East Texas dialect and turns of phrase. They give the book the black humor I enjoy.
review 2: If you enjoy Mark Twain's coming of age tale, Huckleberry Finn and Stephen King's thrillers, you will love this book. May Lynn is a beautiful girl who has Hollywood aspirations but she is found dead in the Sabine River. Sue Ellen and her frien
... moreds Terry and Jinx set out on the Sabine River to spread May Lynn's ashes in Hollywood, land of her dreams. They steal money and end up being pursued by their enemies. Will Sue Ellen and her friends survive? It is story filled with life lessons, mystery and suspense. In the end, Sue Ellen and her friends will learn harsh lessons about just how hard growing up can really be. less

This was an interesting, fast-paced story, boggded down by an over-use of similes by the author.

5 stars, great coming of age story. Joe Lansdale is like a modern day Mark Twain.
