review 1: Bang-on funny! Whether you have a child or not, How Not to Calm a Child on a Plane will have you rolling in the aisles - of an aircraft or elsewhere! You will finally read ALL those things you have often thought about children (and their parents) but have been reluctant to voice. Be forewarned that Ms. Stein's humor is not for the faint-of-heart - you will be hard-pressed to find a more honest, direct, and head-on comedic observer of the human race (and other races, too) than this author. Readers will follow Ms. Stein's journey from Canada where she was "...born to a pair of dope-smoking, radical hippie Jewish intellectuals"(who are as funny as their daughter); to L.A. where Stein took on the mantle of actor, comedian, and writer during the "me" decade; to a place where... more she never thought she'd find herself - as a married woman in her late thirties who made the decision that she ("and the husband") wanted a child.Because this laugh-out-loud journey periodically veers away from the challenges of raising "the kid" in Chicago and L.A., it never clings to its main topic obsessively. So the book moves beyond the category of "advice for parents" and includes the kind of warm, witty, hilarious & warped (in a good way) observations that having a child would induce in some. Thankfully it did for Ms. Stein. It is that diversity which keeps the material about both the author and her child fresh, VERY funny, and yes, informative. Whether you have children or not, we've all wanted to know what to do to keep that kid in Aisle 18 from screaming and throwing pointy objects at surrounding passengers. Read this book, and you may - or may not! - learn the answer, but you'll have a great time along the way. Keep the books coming, Ms. Stein. There's a severe shortage of caustic humor on today's best-seller lists!
review 2: This book was SUCH fun! It’s fresh. It's impossible to pigeonhole this as a "mom-lit" book, it's so much more! It's a brilliantly off-kilter “momoir” about growing up in Winnipeg, a child of hippie pot-smokers, and what happened after she had “unprotected sex” with the guy she lovingly calls You Sappy Bastard. And you know … you so rarely see a floating dead guy in a “Mom Book.” less
