review 1: A friend of mine passed this book along to me since I have recently become more enthusiastic about participating in 5Ks (although I jog at most, rather than running). The author is apparently quite well known as a pioneer of the slow-running movement after starting the sport at 43. This book was a combination of memoir, philosophy, and motivational writing and a quick and enjoyable read. I liked the emphasis put on doing things for the joy of doing them rather than the competitive value or to be "the best" which has always been my approach to doing physical things from yoga to martial arts to 5K. I don't know that I will ever turn into a runner like the author did, but the book at least motivated to keep being active and reminded me of the many mental and spiritual ben... moreefits of doing so.
review 2: Book blurb: A funny thing happened on my way to middle age. I became an athlete. And not just any athlete, but a runner—all without taking a running step until I was 43 years old. This is a memoir about how the author went from being a couch potato who was "overweight, uninspired, and saddled with a pack-and-a-half-a-day smoking habit" to running. In parts funny, in parts poignant, with some learned-the-hard-way lessons shared, this is a fun read for runners and other "adult-onset athletes". less
