review 1: A collection of finely written love letters from some of the world's most well known men - Henry VIII, Cromwell, George Washington, Mozart, Napoleon, Beethoven, Liszt, Jack London, Mark Twain, Kafka, and George Bernard Shaw being but a few of them. I enjoyed the ones which were written by men to their wives (Washington, Sir Walter Raleigh, Cromwell, Mozart, etc.) but found it quite disturbing how many of them were written by men to women who were already married (Beethoven, Lord Byron, Liszt, Flaubert, and Honore de Balzac). I also found it highly ironic how often a man would profess himself completely enraptured by an illicit love, and when once married to the object of that love would quickly tire of it.I also find that this collection of letters weighs itself heavily in... more my estimation of the men included. For shame, Beethoven, Liszt, and Byron! Hurrah for Washington, Cromwell, and Sir Walter! Hurrah for men who stayed true to their wives! Hurrah for men who felt deeply and retained their honor! Hurrah!
review 2: If only men still wrote like this to the women that they love. It's so intriguing because many of the people who were included in this were known for their "manliness" but when it came to women they were soft. Also, while they wrote these fantastic letters many were to mistresses or if they were to their wives it was later stated that they had a mistress. Does this prove that you can love more than one person? less
