review 1: When I saw this at the library, I knew it was for me. Look at that book's face on the cover! Hilarious! This book didn't disappoint. The story itself is silly but it is the fantastic (and sometimes creepy) illustrations done by Mark Fearing (appropriately named? Haha!) that really made this book. The Book that eats people had so many great facial expressions! I couldn't get over it! I loved looking at all the little details of the illustrations. I also loved how the illustrations had a variety of styles and different outlets. It really looked like a number of people illustrated the book without talking to each other and then they put it all together. I really liked that - it fit the story so well! There were two pictures of The Book that I just loved and wanted to share...bu... moret photobucket is currently "down for maintenance" and so I can't add the pictures there to post them here. So hopefully later today this review will be updated!
review 2: Ominous and silly are woven successfully through the pairing of author Perry's story and illustrator Mark Fearing's application of collage. Yes, the book does eat people and the details are not for the faint of heart. It all started with Sammy Ruskin who did not wash his hands after eating a peanut butter sandwich. The book tasted that peanut butter and well, the book ate him and spit out his bones. This is the perfect tale for the child who wants a story that's a little bit scary and very funny. less
