John was born in South Africa, but lived in England. He graduated from the King Edward's School and later form the Exeter College. He started his career as a professor at Oxford University. The first fantasy novel was written in 1937 and was named The Hobbit. He did the wo... morenderful drawings for his book himself. Later, he started his work on the internationally known bestseller The Lord of the Rings, which was published in 1954-1955. He was inspired by numerous European myths and created his own maps, language and traditions. One more his books are Tree and Leaf and Smith of Wootton Major.
