review 1: I have a lot of interest in this part of the world, but I was a little disappointed by this memoir, the story of the author's trips to Haiti from the Dominican Republic for the benefit of a Haitian employee on her coffee farm. I gleaned very little about Haitian culture or the after effects of the earthquake, but I learned a little about the difficulties of traveling across that particular border and about the author's kindhearted feelings toward the poor. It was interesting reading about the author's parents, los pitouses, living with Alzheimer's in their mansion, cared for by a staff. Caregiving seems to be a theme in everything I read.
review 2: In trying to think of a word to describe this book, the first that came to me was Delightful. But then I paused, ... moreits about bribes and illegal border crossings, husband and wife bickering, earthquake, alzheimer's, mobs, poverty, potholes and travel sickness….but really in spite of all these things its about a lady's adventure in going to her neighboring country to make good on a promise to attend a wedding, and the interactions with people that result. The wedding takes place in the very beginning of the book and I was wondering if she chose a good title, but then I realized that none of this would have happened without that wedding. In the book club, some complained that while she had some insights and beautiful thoughts, she didn't tie it together in a way as a supposed excellent writer she could. Also that it seemed like the just gave her journal to a publisher without editing much. I loved the pictures and map :) Those things didn't really bother me and I just enjoyed the trip and learning more about a portion of the world I don't know much about. less
