review 1: The Billionaire and the Mechanic In the novel the billionaire and the mechanic is about the worlds fastest boats racing for the worlds oldest trophy and how Oracle beat all odds and had the biggest comeback in the history of the Americas cup. The novel is written by Julian Guthrie and she does a good job telling about the history of the cup and the background of both Larry Ellison (the billionaire) and Norbert Bajor (the Mechanic). The novel is very exciting and informational because the fact that boats are so fast that they fly about 6 feet above the water and also the fact that they are here locally up north in san Francisco. The book also hints about Larry Ellison's lifestyle before he became the CEO of Oracle, and 3 years before founding the company he filed for bankru... moreptcy. which I found amazing considering he is the 5th richest man in the world. On the other hand we have a family mechanic, Norbert Bajor who is the commodore of a ran down old shack they call golden gate yacht club. And how the two completely different sols meet and end up winning the most prized trophy in the whole sailing world. over all I really enjoyed reading about the 34th Americas cup and he come back of the century that left the word star struck. I would recommend this book to anyone that loves sailing or just likes a good underdog story. The only turn off about the book is that I got very slow at times and I would just go on about how amazing Larry was or how Oracle is the best software that has ever been created.
review 2: This book literally taught me everything I know about yacht racing. It presents a sympathetic, human view of Larry Ellison of Oracle who does not always have the best press. The story of how a blue collar yacht club teamed with Oracle Racing in the fights for the America's Cup makes compelling reading whether you know port from starboard. The pages on Ellison's long time friendship with Steve Jobs add interest as well. Along the way we see and hear a lot about a level of wealth which is incomprehensible to nearly anyone.A dream unrealized in the book is the story of the scholarship high school Ellison wishes to found. The whole book is a fine illustration of the journey being the important part of life, not just the goals. less
