review 1: A father and his son, Dave, visit a natural history museum together. At the beginning, the child asks "Are the dinosaurs dead, Dad?" Of course, dad says yes, and proceeds to take his son on a tour of the dinosaurs (which, oddly, are not skeletons, but fleshy models) displayed in the museum. Dad gives a brief introduction to each dinosaur--the name and a fact about it. Funny little signs in front of each of the dinosaurs give warnings to reinforce what dad says, like "mind the hands" or "mind the teeth." Every time dad turns away, though, the dinosaurs interact with young Dave in one way or another, such as trying to eat his burger. Dave asks, "Why is it trying to eat my burger?" Dad rolls his eyes, smile, and say, "Diplodocus don't eat burgers, Dave. They're herbivores. It... more's just your imagination." In the end, of course, dear Dad is shown the error of his ways when a T-Rex chases them down the street.I loved the silly, exaggerated styles of people and dinosaurs alike, and the curlicue details on some of the dinosaur's skin. It's a lovely book to look at. I appreciated that informational tidbits about dinosaurs were dispersed throughout, that the names were spelled out phonetically (great for the adults reading the book aloud, interesting for kids), and that the meaning of the dinosaur names were given. I enjoyed that 'know-it-all' Dad is given a run for his money. What I did not like was the end, which was so unfortunately abrupt. There was a lot of build up to the moment, but the last page just kind of fizzled instead of being especially satisfying.
review 2: This story I got sent from the publishers for an honest review. I took this book to school to read it to my class, I was unsure of the reaction I was going to get from them. This book is about Dave and his dad. His dad takes him to the dinosaur museum, on his way round he see's the dinosaurs move and tells dad. Dad always replies the same 'it's just your imagination'. This is until dad gets a shock at the end of the story! The children loved this book. They began to join in with dad as he says 'it's just your imagination', they could not wait to see what the new dinosaur would be on the next page. They found the story very funny, down to the illustrations and even after the story had been read and I flicked back over pages they began laughing again! From an educational point of view the story is good for introducing dinosaurs and also language associated with them. 'Herbivore' was a word introduced and engaged conversation with discussing this. The also gave a starting point to talk about 'Carnivores' and 'Omnivores'. We also spoke about museums and how we knew the dinosaurs were dead. I would recommend this book for nursery and primary school children. To read more reviews please go to:Mrsbbooks2011.blogspot.co.uk less
