review 1: As the grand finale and 4th in the series, this should have been my favorite as everything comes together. Unfortunately, I cannot say that. Instead it was a let down for me, and my least favorite. Why? Because I felt that Bailey became too self-centered and just plain whiny. And the "back and forth" just became too much for me after going thru it for 3 previous books. I was starting to cop an attitude of -- "alright, already could we JUST get on with it." I hope others loved this book though, because Karen Kingsbury is to be commended for her clean, christian writing. Of course, I will continue to read her, even though this book fell short of the mark for me personally.
review 2: Reading Karen Kingsbury is a lot like eating "Death By Chocolate". It soun
... moreds really good before you actually dig in, but just one bite and you are convinced you have had enough. I loved the Baxter series, and gone through the other series, but by book four of this spin off series and I was about to gag before I was done.Who will Bailey marry? Cody or Brandon? I just didn't care. Bailey comes across as dim-witted and vapid. And here's my other gripe...and it has to do with adoption. Ms. Kingsbury is an adoptive mom, and it is wonderful that she portrays adoption in her books. HOWEVER--she insists on using archaic language and inadvertently makes adoption cliched. For example--the "preferred" adoption language is "placed" or "made an adoption plan" rather than "gave up" or "put up for adoption". The phrases that have to do with putting up stem from the orphan trains when children were literally "up" on a platform. And yes, birth mothers face loss. I do not want to minimize the grieving that birth mothers go through. (My daughter placed a baby for adoption and while she knows this was best for her son, she still grieves the loss two years later.) But it is often more helpful to focus on what is "given to the child" rather than "given up from the birth mother". The next time I am tempted to pick up a KK book, I hope I remember my death by chocolate analogy and keep myself on a diet. less
