review 1: Library copy 248.32 B73bWell! I enjoyed her first book more because this one is more about theology than anything, and I cringe to hear her unbelieving view of God. She makes God fit her ideas. But she is an excellent writer and I like the way she thinks and she brings up some valid points/issues about prayer -- just that she doesn't believe in prayer as Jesus taught and/or the Bible. She doesn't believe God will answer because she doesn't know Him personally.I learned a lot from reading this book. Mostly about how lost religious people think, at least this Unitarian Universalist minister. But she is so lost. And so, ironically, I am praying for her salvation :)I do love the idea of reading Scripture aloud in the original language. Not all the time, but familiar pas... moresages, just to hear what is sounds like. (Kate does this.) But if I had to choose between that and the truth, I'd choose the truth.
review 2: Two quotes: "My cousin told me she prays for her extended family. I'm part of that, so my cousin prays for me. I am happy not because her prayer appears to be effective, but because I count it a privilege to be held in her heart." p. 137"In order to speak of God at all, we have to use some sort of word, but to insist on the perfection of a particular word is to mistake the window for the view." p. 154Amen! less
