review 1: The book was about friends. Best of friends, and that appealed to me. I think there was a certain complexity in that simple dynamic. Four friends, two turned out to be in love with each other, one decided he was bisexual, one couldn't be more straight. As I pore through the book, I couldn't help but be disappointed somehow of the way the events in the characters’ life was presented. I’m certainly no expert in these kind of things, but I really think the book would have made more appeal when they were chronological. A lot of flashbacks that came out of nowhere but still gave me the occasional aww. There was so much history between the characters there and it feels really weird to just find out about it after. It just wasn't effectively outlined for my taste. But o... morether than that, it was a good story. The inner struggle and conflicts of a relationship, or having one and the process of getting there for that matter. Reminds us that relationships are difficult, gay or straight so we must give it our all, at the risk of our hearts getting ripped open. That it’s okay to be scared, to think and think and think about things, or to not think at all, it doesn't matter at the end of the day. It’s that you gave yourself a shot at happiness.
review 2: Four Corners by Kate McMurray centers on three young men in Chicago who used to be best friends in their childhood baseball days with a fourth guy, Adam, who hurt them badly when he disappeared with no explanation five years ago. The story opens when Adam unexpectedly returns for the funeral of their beloved coach. First-person narrator Jake is shocked to see Adam, and deeply hurt because Jake was in love with him. Five years ago, the two had managed to share a fleeting moment of mutual attraction before Adam disappeared without a trace. Now, Adam begs for a second chance to earn his friends’ trust and closeness – and to have a romantic relationship with Jake. But Jake and Adam have vastly different ideas of how “out” to be. They must compromise and endure the ups-and-downs of their renewed relationship as they try to get to know each other all over again. This smoothly written novel is a masterpiece of subtle realism. No over-the-top emotional breakdowns, no farfetched thriller elements, no preaching, no angst, no nonstop meaningless sex, and no contrived Big Misunderstandings. Most striking of all, there is no immediate forgiveness and smooth sailing to the Happily Ever After ending. The characters do get a splendid and well-earned HEA, but only after some realistic fights, doubts, attacks of cold feet, and cooling-off periods in which they question whether their relationship is worth it.Romance traditionalists may get uneasy at the way Jake and Adam negotiate their emotional terrain – specifically, their very realistic way of running hot-and-then-cold toward each other. I admire such a daring move on the author’s part. I also felt a consistent and deep level of caring between the characters.Even when they were temporarily withdrawing from each other in confusion or resentment, I never got the sense that they were manipulating each other or taking each other for granted. Just the opposite. They seem as if destined for the other from the first days of their friendship as little boys. They care so much that it is a struggle for each (especially Jake) not to be hurt again as they were five years ago.Their sex scenes in particular, while not very numerous, are deeply emotional and infused with meaning for these two men as they reconnect. The sex scenes are very hot. Even better, they develop character and advance the plot as Jake and Adam find out things about each other and experience obstacles to their relationship. A wonderful novel and a beautiful romance.Val for AReCafe less

2.5 Way too much navel gazing and whining, too many flashbacks. Not nearly enough chemistry.
