review 1: There is a lot more borderline than Buddha in this memoir. I liked that she kept the focus on her symptoms and therapy and the aspects of mindfulness in DBT that would lead her to Buddhism. It was also fun to find out that we'd been to the same goth club and meditation center in the oughts. There are some very intense sections - going to therapy with her mother stands out particularly in my mind.
review 2: There are things that I can appreciate about this book - the author is very candid about her experiences and her emotions, and I have a great deal of respect for her openness and willingness to work on herself and improve. However, I found the book poorly written and tedious. I don't think Van Gelder is a particularly talented writer, nor do I think that h
... moreer story is particularly interesting. I like that although the book covers about 6 years of her life, she doesn't leave us with a happy ending, but an ending where in she is honest about being a work-in-progress. However I felt that this memoir was very self-involved; that could be the nature of her disorder or memoirs in general, but the book really lacked an insight into the bigger picture, which is what, in my opinion, differentiates mediocrity in personal story telling to powerful story telling. less

Lost interest. Was hoping there would be more emphasis on Buddhism
