review 1: Bleh. I downloaded this book because the description reminded me vaguely of The Witch of Blackbird Pond (a vastly superior book). Unfortunately, I found the writing clunky, the plot only mildly interesting, and the characters entirely one-dimensional. The main female character was disgustingly focused on the romance, at the expense of actually developing in the midst of trying circumstances. It was hard to stomach over 200 pages of her mooning over the guy. Of course, this "perfect" guy is primarily in love with a fantasy version of her as well, and wants to maintain this version of her despite the fact that at one point they're sailing a ship by themselves. I believe this excerpt basically sums up what I disliked about the book: "I made peace with my idleness. I knew I wa... mores capable of helping more. And Nicholas knew it too. It wasn't that he had to take care of me. He wanted to. And I let him."Ick all around.
review 2: This book starts off in dramatic fashion. A terrible calamity. The ship that our Heroine is sailing to a new life on is in the eye of a hurricane. Both her and her father end up in the sea and he does what he can to save her. Upon waking Tessa is in a new ship. but something is not quite right. This is a love story. But it is also something of an adventure story. The trials and turmoils of Tessa are seemingly never ending and you can't help but feel for the poor girl and the terrible situations she ends up in. The Hero is dashing and mysterious (as all good heros are) and risks his own neck for the lovely lady. This book was fun to read. You get a lot of swash for your buckle. The writer has kept the heroine as true to an 18th century well to do lady as possible, whilst still being approchable and readable to the modern reader. I personally find the simpering helplessness of gentile women to be somewhat underwhelming but in this story, whilst occasionally I was yelling at the book for her to just "pull herself together!" Most of the time it works, because you never forget who and what she is. This is an enjoyable read. A pirate love story with a good dash of gut churning terror. I'd recommend it. less
