review 1: I really liked the idea of Grace being able to communicate telepathically with animals...BUT, the rest of this book was such a knockoff of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels that it almost ruined it for me. Grace is Stephanie, Uncle Wiley is the Grandma Mazur character, Kai is a cross between Morelli and Ranger, and--get this--Grace has a thing for donuts! Oh, and Moss is a combination of Stephanie's pet Rex and Morelli's dog Bob. Grace/Stephanie is always getting into crazy predicaments and her cop boyfriend is always warning her to stay out of trouble and she never listens to him. Stephanie drives an old clunker called "Big Blue," and Grace drives an old clunker called "Bluebell."
review 2: This is the second book in a series, and it can easily be re
... moread as a standalone. The summary above and the other reviews give you a good idea of what the book is about, so I’ll just tell you what I liked about this story. What I liked:The mystery is well-thought-out and kept me guessing. More than one crime is committed, and the connections between the different crimes are never obvious. Figuring out how everything comes together was very enjoyable.I very much enjoyed the animals in the book. They have distinct personalities and always managed to make me smile. I was a little disappointed that Kai’s cat didn’t make an appearance; she was absolutely hilarious in the first book. There was some great humor. Several scenes had me laughing. It’s a nice and friendly kind of humor, too. Grace finds herself in some embarrassing situations, but the humor never comes across as cruel or cringeworthy. What I didn’t like:There are a few scenes toward the beginning of the book where Grace’s behavior towards her boyfriend is rather unkind. Her reactions make sense considering her character and history, but she comes across as a little irrational. She definitely overreacts. It took me a while after that to warm up to her. This is a very minor quibble, though. Most of the time she is a very likable (though socially awkward) character. Conclusion:This is one of my favorite mystery series at the moment. The characters are likable, the mystery engrossing, and the humor puts a smile on my face.I can recommend it to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries. less
