review 1: An interesting historical novel, until the point it veers off into heavy-breathing soap opera. The underlying plot is still good but in the last third or so of the novel certain plot points, actions of the main characters, and motivations are definitely eye-roll-worthy. It's too bad since Eastern cultures are only just beginning to be addressed by historical fiction writers (probably over-full on Tudors and Borgias), and this could have been one of the great early works in addressing that part of world culture. Maybe I'm being too harsh and it will actually be considered among not only the first but the best, but for me the shift in tone took a four star book down to two or three at best.
review 2: AudiobookGreat narrationThis is a dark and twisty book with rea
... morelly great characters. It's historical fiction about the Ottoman Empire - spoiled, twisted, freaky "royalty", but that's how they roll, I guess.Main characters you hate and love all in the same breath. What I loved about the book is that I could never guess what was going to happen next. So unpredictable, so good. It's really a complex story that is so much more than the book description. Now, who will like this book? Well, it's not your traditional romance. There's a lot of violence and these Sultan's did some pretty sick, cringe worthy stuff, so if you have a weak constitution, it's not for you.It has a lot of references to the Muslim faith and the Koran which I don't know much about and I honestly couldn't tell you if it was factual but it was important to the story. So if that isn't your thing? Maybe not for you. And I'm not into either of those things, but still enjoyed it. So there you go. less

Very good book. Loved the history and stories of the Ottoman empire, even if fiction.
