review 1: I gave this book four stars because I really liked the writing style and the story. The characters are not so likeable, though Daniel is true to his Quaker roots to the end but seems to have gotten himself in over his head while striking out on his own to strange territory. His older children are little comfort and actually cause him more grief than anything else but it is the slave boy and the healer that I most felt a connection with. They are what kept me going through this story.

Tough read but really feels like you are reading facts of life for that time in that area.
