review 1: Heart felt book that nailed the horror of an alcoholic state of mind. So much pain and suffering with no help in the offing. In the 60's there was no assistance available to a family that had to struggled with a monster who was fueled by a quart of bourbon a day. I loved the part where the author took time to deglamorize the deaths of such notables as Hemingway (who walked by the house), Cobain, Morrison and on and on. I was a police officer in a former life and had a front row seat to the awful side of a drinking life. It's horrible, and was a factor in my story, Brand of Justice.
review 2: This is a deeply personal autobiography of the author and biography of a Mayo Clinic physician/surgeon so respected that he was kept on the payroll long after he could no l
... moreonger perform his duties. The author spends years gathering as many details as he could of his father's behaviors and how others reacted to them. Luke Sullivan, his mother, his five brothers, and his maternal grandparents were all prolific journal keepers and letter-writers, many of which were saved and given to Luke for this book; we find out why toward the end of the book, creating even more poignancy and empathy for this family. The author interviewed Mayo Clinic doctors, neighbors, and even got the psychiatric notes when Dr. Sullivan was institutionalized. If you pick up this book to read it, you may find yourself judging the behaviors of family members and co-workers by your own standards and values. Don't. Stay with the story to the end for a glimpse into coping mechanisms that, hopefully none of us will ever have to employ. less
