review 1: In true Scandinavian murder fashion, there is lots of blame to go around when the killer is finally revealed. The plot is clean and straight forward, although no less heartbreaking for those attributes. The heart of the problem is a very selfish mother who mistakenly has four children, each of which she messes up in her own way, some of them irrevocably. Quite good, especially if you like the genre.
review 2: Is it just me or are a lot of Scandinavian writer obsessed with damaged people? I've read a number of different writers who all feature a nameless person talking about his mother or father or both who abused him physically and/or mentally. Maybe they don't have any other kind of crime there? Or perhaps their readers just love this stuff. Actually I did... more too, but it was really intense. This is not the first book by this author, so I do have some catching up to do. The books take place on Gotland Island and feature Inspector Anders Knutas happily married and the father of twins. There has been an uptick of violence among teenagers that is bewildering to a lot of people. Kids are drinking and having violent fights. A boy who was a friend of his children is lying in a coma after being beaten. Then a local developer and event planner is murdered. Suspicion first goes to his wife whom he was planning on divorcing. In between we read the voice of an unknown figure who talks about his childhood with an abusive mother. It didn't take much to figure out what was going on here although there were quite a few surprises nevertheless. I'll definitely be reading the earlier books so I can do a catch up on her main character though. Good read all around! less
