review 1: Some well known truths, backed up in the laboratory and the field. I liked the genetics chapter, and the stats on families who have played in professional sports vs. the general population. I especially liked the chapters on the role of nutrition and supplements in performance (Beet juice! Coffee! Creatine!) and the final chapter about long-held records and the way they are broken over time. Interested in data and sport science? You'll definitely get something out of this.
review 2: Start to finish, an absolutely fascinating read. Author McClusky looks at elite sports performance from all angles, from genetics to diet to training techniques and equipment. Doping comes in for a brief treatment, of course, but so do currently-legal methods of boosting performance
... more: compression suits, Live High Train Low, baking soda(!), and increasing sleep.Who knew that, if you're exercising for less than 75 minutes, "you probably don't need any carbohydrate intake at all for optimal performance. Your body already has plenty of fuel for these shorter efforts without any sort of bars or gels or drinks." Or that you can fool your brain by just swishing carb-loaded liquid around in your mouth and spitting it back out? Other proven effective and legal boosters? Caffeine, the aforementioned baking soda, beet juice (London Olympians cleaned out the beet juice supply in a ten-mile radius), and carnosine.Add to these, fatigue may be largely in your head, and there are tricks to dupe your brain into thinking you're less tired.Anyhow, any weekend warriors, coaches, and parents dreaming big dreams for their kids to become super athletes will find this a good read. I do wish he'd talked more about swimming, but just about every sport got a mention. less
