review 1: Hazel is quite accustomed to being thought "odd." Her parents are the caretakers of Memory's Garden, the town cemetery, and Hazel herself is the smartest kid in her class. She has a Mysteries Notebook in which she jots down any strange facts or observations she comes across. Right now, there are plenty of mysteries. Mr. Jones, the new handyman at the cemetery, is extremely mysterious and slightly scary. The imminent dangers of Russian spies and communism (since it is 1953 and the Cold War is going strong) are all over the news, and the factory in town is rumored to be rife with Red spies. Then a new boy arrives and he is just possibly smarter than Hazel. She feels uncomfortable with this, but the two become friends, and sleuthing partners. Hazel is a wonderfully spunky cha... moreracter whom readers will warm to, who does the best she can with the limited information she is given. One has to think that if her parents would just explain some things to her, there would be much less confusion in Hazel's world. An inventive and interesting chapter book for middle grade readers.
review 2: Hazel Kaplansky is okay with being odd because she has one friend and she's the smartest kid in her class. When Becky moves away and another, maybe smarter, kid shows up in their class, she begins to question all she's known. With no choice, she befriends the new boy who agrees to look into the possibility of a nest of Communist sympathizers in their small town during the 1950s though he is not nearly as convinced or enthusiastic about it as Hazel wishes. Her enthusiasm leads to accusations and assumptions that eventually force her to confront what she wants to believe vs. what is true. less

Hazel is a GREAT main character and a strong little girl who learns from her mistakes.

Endearing mystery for middle-school kids. Much less didactic than The Water castle.

I enjoyed the quirky protagonist and the historical details.
