review 1: As I first started reading this book I thought I mistakenly got a book written for teenagers/young adults. As I kept reading I felt it could be for adults too. It was good, a simple story but also had a few life lessons mixed in. I grew up in the 50's & 60's so could relate to a lot of the 60's music references. I was disappointed that it ended quite abruptly (I felt)and didn't have closure with the main character's family. But, all saying I enjoyed it.
review 2: A Simple Song has an interesting set up. Katrina is an Amish girl living in Holmes County, Ohio. She loves to sing, but has been chastised for doing so by her father. No one in her family sings except at church. Her mom never sang her lullaby's because her father forbade it (and women submit t
... moreo their husbands - glad I'm not Amish!). Katrina's grandma passes away and her aunt opens a box of grandmothers that has an "English" record, a radio, and some clothing from the 1960's. Also, her father is in terrible pain and in need of a back surgery that the family cannot afford. Katrina overhears her aunt (married to her father's older half brother) encouraging her husband to kick Katrina's family off the farm since her father can't carry his part. With encouragement from a friend Katrina ends up auditioning for a reality singing program in hopes of winning enough money to cover her father's surgery. The book follows her on her journey to Hollywood where she feels that everything "English" is horrid except for her fellow contestants and all she wants to do is to return home to the family and community that practically shunned her for singing and going on the contest. So many stories are started and then never finished, or are just preposterous. She sings a duet with a fellow contestant who immediately declares his love for her and his willingness to convert to Amish (where did that come from?). She learns her grandma was a heroin addict (but apparently all it took was returning to the Amish to cure her). You never find out if her uncle tries to kick them off the farm, or how her family treats her on the farm. So many details went into the competition and everything else was left hanging. less
