review 1: As a law-enforcement K-9 handler I was able to pick up new training tips and ideas for training my police service dog. I'm looking forward to hearing Mike Rittland at our association training this spring.Rittland does a great job outlining his training philosophy and the steps he takes to get a military working dog prepared for life and the special operations community. He begins their training at five weeks old and the training continues all the way up until they retire. The fact he starts them so young and customizes them to various tasks in which they will be expected to carry out as special operations canines shows a dedication to the profession unlike no other vendor that I've ever met.
review 2: This is an easy "beach read" about the training and working ... moreof military dogs coming out of Trident kennels. If you're unfamiliar with the territory, it will give you a nice basic overview. There are a few dog stories peppered within, but it mostly covers how military dogs are raised and trained in today's world. I found the over-use of acronyms annoying/confusing (if I knew there would be so many, I would have kept a pen and paper with me while reading) as well as the use of "Good Guys" and "Bad Guys" when describing the soldiers themselves and the opposition (as if life is some sort of cartoon-?). But other than these little blips, it was a nice book, quick read, and I recommend it to all dog people. Great photo insert within too. less
