review 1: This was quite an enjoyable read...while at first the cheerleader thing was emphasised way too much, as the book progressed its importance was reduced-thankfully. The trials and challenges of working in totally isolated environments is highlighted and the pleasures of insects, flesh burrowing worms and bees are shown. Makes you really appreciated the joys of a warm shower! Shows a career that one would have thought was long gone-good read.
review 2: I can't remember how/where I heard about this book, but the title definitely grabbed me. I actually recommended it for purchase and when my library got a digital copy, I jumped on it! (Library = Awesome) What I expected: story of a girly girl who somehow ends up in a jungle and finds her calling. What I got: story o
... moref a girl who knew her calling all along, stumbled into to professional cheerleading for a little while (though it was never really her thing), and then followed her true dreams into the jungle, all the while staying true to her feminine side. I guess I was expecting something a little more transformative-- but really, the whole NFL cheerleader gig was just barely mentioned. The whole having-a-family thing was a blip. The book is more about hard work, good luck and adventure, focused on the professional. It actually felt a little bit impersonal, oddly enough. But she does have some crazy adventures! And she is incredibly intelligent and has found great success in a male-dominated profession, which is pretty inspiring. less
