review 1: As a grandparent and observer of our changing world, I was glad to see a book that encouraged a move away from the structured kind of scheduled, supervised play on sport teams, camps, and classroom activities that parents increasingly rely on. Many of us in my generation think back on the hours we would play with friends in the yard or street or the summer days spent outside making up our own games. In this book, the author points out how important this type of unstructured creative play is, not only to the quality of kids lives but to their emotional, intellectual development. This are some good tips here for how parents can create a safe yet open and imaginative environment for children.
review 2: I like the idea of "taking back childhood" and the author's
... more basic premises, but to me, the author came across like everything she did with her own children was exactly correct and everything any one else does with their children re: toys bought, TV allowed, discipline administered, etc. is wrong (even her own daughters-in-law do not get exempt from her harsh judgments). To be honest, I couldn't take the condescension anymore after the first about half of the book and just skimmed the rest of the book because I hate leaving a book unfinished. less
