review 1: The Novel Alive in The Killing fields by Nawuth Keat with Martha E. Kendall is a nonfiction book with great visual experiences. The Characters are Bunpah, his friends and family call him Mop. Mop was a healthy baby boy, and he is the fifth of eight children. Mop’s father, who is a successful rice farmer and has provided his family with wealth, because of his success he is the wealthiest family in their village. Chantha, who is Mops older sister, lives in the city with Chanya, Lee and Bunna and more of their family. Van Lan, who is Chantha’s Husband who is like a mentor to Mop because he’s older and very brave. Zhen is an ex- worker of Mop’s father on the rice field, who was fired because he would always consume to much alcohol a day, and then joined the Khmer Rouge... more a rebellious group in Cambodia led by Pol Pot. The setting of this non-fiction book Alive in The Killing Fields is in Cambodia village Salatrave. This village wasn’t so big nor small, there were many houses and shacks, Mop and his family lived on the top of the village, a hill and had the biggest house made of brick, beside his house, can imagine a giant rice field where his father works. The jungle is another setting; basic things like giant trees and flowers that grew from the ground. The most important major plot in this book would be when the Khumer Rouge can and destroyed the life style, everything they once knew was gone, was taken away from them. They were treated like slaves, Mop and his family, except for his father who had to run off before the Khumer Rouge got a chance to kill him, since he was the wealthiest and since one of his ex- workers were part of the group. Mop tries to find ways to help his family escape but fails over and over again risking him life every time. The other characters where sent to work in the rice fields. It was a rough living situation. Major problem was food, no one ever go enough all their hard work never got paid and were starving. The Khumer Rouge kept the food for themselves and their families. Mop comes up with an idea to go to the shack were they store the food and steal hand full of rice and stuffs them in a bag. The only possible way Mop would have been able to do this is because his job was to bring the rice bags to the Khumer Rouge. Mop was able to provide food. This book was absolutely fantastic, it was wonder hearing a story like this, know that something like this happened was horrible and hard to read but yet I never wanted to put the book down. Every bit of this book was visible. There wasn’t anything I disliked about this book, I say that because it is a nonfiction and I can judge they way they write or tell the story because it is their story, I wouldn’t change a thing. I would recommend this book to almost anybody who likes to read non-fictions. I would recommend this book because it is simply wonderful there isn’t that one boring chapter or start of the book. It starts out strong and stays like that the whole way through out the book. I wouldn’t recommend this book to people who like soft book, like romantic because there is nothing soft or romantic about this book. This was a great book.
review 2: Alive in the Killing Fields is a book about Mop's perspective on be a slave for the khmer rouge. Mop's perspective is that his family is being punish and killed for being educated and one of the richest people in the village. Mop thinks his family did nothing work. Mop's perspective limits my perspective because i don't know his family did do something work. My prespective is that his family is being punish for being educated.I would recommend this book because it teaches about the past, something we can learn from and not do again. less
