review 1: This book was entertaining and generally enjoyable however the amoral conclusion disappointed in that the reader was hoping things wouldn't turn out the way they did and the author would become a better man. It seemed to be an inconcsistency in the main character as it had been developed through the story. The conclusion was therefore unrealistic due to the relationship the main character developed with the son of the owner of the fishing fleet. It's an okay book to get a flavor of hard times making a living at sea, but life on the land ain't no barrel of laughs either.
review 2: The novel has an intriguing premise and it is well written. Having said that, it falters in several ways. Too many unlikely events occur to make this plot a believable one. The author... more creates interesting characters and places them in a world of desperation and sadness. As the story unfolds it drags and grows heavier page by page. While the last part of the book makes a last gasp reprieve, it remains unfulfilled and unrealistic. less
