review 1: Flew through this more quickly than I expected, since I had already read the majority of it via Hornby's Believer series (The Polysyllabic Spree, etc.) The remaining tiny chunk wasn't as enjoyable as the other books had been, but I still appreciated the concept. Maybe the books Hornby read and wrote about just didn't match up with my own tastes at the moment? Whatever the reason, I'd still happily read more of his "What I Bought / What I Read" columns.
review 2: Always interested in other people's reading habits, I grabbed this book intending to skim a few pages just to indulge my curiosity about what Nick Hornby likes to read. My skimming quickly turned into actual reading which then led to that fun and frantic feeling of "I can't put this book down." What ap... morepeals to me so much about Hornby's writing here is that he's serious about books, but he doesn't take books too seriously. He's all for putting down a book that just isn't working for you, even if it seems to be working for everyone else. He helped me feel better about my own propensity to buy more books than I can ever hope to read, and I'm always thankful when someone manages to affirm my literary choices. ("Literary choices" sounds better than "book hoarding.") I'd read some of the books Hornby reviews, but thanks to his humor and passion, even reading about authors and books I'd never heard of was a delight. He even made me want to give Charles Dickens another try, which I didn't see coming. If you like books so much that you enjoy reading about them, pick this one up. It's a lot of fun. less
