review 1: Hurricanes are a part of life for people who live along the shore but a strong hurricane like Hurricane Lauris does not come along very often. Therefore, people who feel they are prepared for hurricane season may find themselves unexpectedly overwhelmed and battling odds they didn't anticipate. This is what happened to the people of Travis' small town and in their last minute efforts to escape they left defenseless pets behind to fend for themselves. Veterinarian Travis stays behind with his sweet, sassy daughter to try to care for as many animals as they can.Bear is a veterinarian in a larger town that is not threatened by the hurricane so when his online friend sends out an SOS through social media and email he immediately answers the call for help. Bear and Travis have ... moreexchanged enough emails and online communication that they know each other well and are attracted to one another before they even meet. Today this happens more often than people realize. When the storm threat passes Bear and Travis are left to survey the devastation of Travis' vet office and community so it only makes sense to pack up and go home with Bear. Even Travis' daughter encourages the duo to build a life together. This isn't exactly insta-love, but because of the short story length we weren't privy to their previous communication so the reader doesn't have the backstory to their attraction. Mr. Williams gave us enough of an insight to the MCs' personalities that we can draw the conclusion that they find in each other a good match. Bear & Travis is a good story and part of an interesting concept of 6 authors writing 6 different stories about 1 hurricane, put together by editor Kris Jacen. I appreciated seeing the individual experiences these characters suffered, and especially liked Bear & Travis.
review 2: Bear and Travis are both veterinarians who have been communicating via email and phone for several months. Travis works in the country, where people have abandoned their pets in the midst of hurricane panic. He and his adopted teenage daughter, Tina, are doing everything they can to save the scared cats and dogs, but it's not enough. When Bear arrives to help, Travis finally feels like he can let go. This novella was the harshest in its description of the hurricane and its aftermath of the three in this series thus far. Despite Bear and Travis's best efforts, many of the animals die. It's not graphic, but it's worthy of a tears-and-heartbreak tag. I certainly got teary eyed. I liked Tina and her sassiness. She struck me as a strong and sensitive kid who really wanted the best for her dad, yet she was still a real teenager with mood swings and a rebellious streak. I liked what I saw of Travis and Bear's interactions (Bear was a big, burly ginger who fit his name, and Travis just wanted someone to take charge for once), but there was little relationship development on page. We don't see the emails or hear the phone calls between the men, so when they finally meet IRL the falling in love feels instant. Also, I get sacrifice, but Travis hadn't had sex for 14 years? There was a quick summary in the epilogue about their life after the hurricane, and the ending was a cute HEA. Overall, this was a quick, sweet read. less
