review 1: I love this book because of Conroy's powerful language, southern humor and absolute love of story. It is an autobiography telling of books and stories that influenced him as a writer & a man. "My attraction to story is a ceaseless current that runs through the center of me. My inextinguishable ardor for reading seems connected to my hunger for story lines that show up in both books and the great tumbling chaos of life." (98)A slim, compact volume that invites me, not only to read it NOW & to savor this slowly. I want to reread The Water is Wide" and try The Great Santini and a few novelists and poets he profiles throughout the story of his reading life. Grat read!
review 2: Probably 3.5 stars, but I rounded down due to the author's hard to understand voice on
... morethe audiobook. Probably unfair, but there you go. There is lots to admire about this book, including the many ways that reading has enriched, ennobled and perhaps saved the life of the author. There are many great book reviews that made me add a few titles to my TBR list and stories about his writing life in a couple of great cities (Paris, Italy) that made me achingly jealous. The author's honesty about his failed marriages and flaws as a father also made me sympathetic. But there's a bit of droning on, just as a warning. Just skip to the next section if you're not feeling it. Worth a read, though. less
