review 1: If I might make a suggestion - LISTEN to this book, whether you read the print copy or not. My boss recommended it to me as a book to listen to during my daily half hour commute. I'm so glad she did. Penny Marshall reads it herself and it truly is as if there's a friend in the car with you. Any child of the 70s who grew up on a diet of Spaghetti-O's, Happy Days and, of course, Laverne & Shirley will recognize many of the names she throws about - Art Garfunkle becomes "Ahtie" for instance. I missed her when the book was over. I really did. I haven't yet found a recorded book since then that was nearly as good.
review 2: Good book! It was interesting the way the stories were told, the way the writing reflected Ms. Marshall's droll and dry sense of humor. At certa
... morein points I found myself judgmental of her choices (and sensed passive lack of active choice where I wished for more active or different choices). But I realized I was applying fairly discriminatory gender stereotypes, and I came to develop real respect for her authenticity and individualism. Prior to reading this book, I didn't have a sense of who Penny Marshall is outside of her Laverne character -- and I am grateful for the opportunity to fill that in. I enjoyed experiencing what it was like for her to cast and produce movies, and what her experience was with well-known entertainers -- and get acquainted with a few I'd not been aware of. I admire that she tells it like it is; commend her creative spirit, leadership, authentic mind and heart. less

Hilarious and fun and just a tad but disturbing. All of which I expect from Penny Marshall.
