Reading this book is like being right next to Harvey Milk every step of the way. The feeling of authenticity and journalistic research is flawless. I recommend both books by Randy Shilts as required reading for the human race.
review 2: This book far exceeded my expectations. I've known about Harvey Milk for many years and as a gay person I obviously took a special interest in his story. What I loved about thi... mores book is how eloquently it weaves his story with that of the overall gay movement since WWII. It also dissects San Francisco politics, the gentrification of The Castro, and city's history very well.I already loved and admired Harvey Milk and saw him as one of my personal heroes, and this book made that feeling even stronger. To come out when he did and ultimately sacrifice his life for the cause was not only honourable, but a direct reason why I can live my life so openly and freely today.It felt particularly poignant given that I'm getting married in two months to another woman - it proves that even though we have a long way to go, we have come very far.A highly recommended read for anyone, regardless of sexual orientation. less
