Danceworx- A Lobo Venture

The Danceworx Academy, set up in November 1998 consists of styles such as Contemporary, Ballet, Classical Ballet, Jazz, Jazz Funk  in Mumbai and Delhi.Developing a student’s creative potential to the highest possible level and to train and channelise young talent within an atmosphere of love and values has always been the aim.

Director

Ashley Lobo is the founder and director of Danceworx. He is an Indian choreographer  and was also one of the three judges for the Indian reality dance talent show India’s Dancing Superstar on Star Plus. He studied dance in Sydney at the Bodenweiser Dance Centre and the much-reputed Sydney Dance Company. His theatrical works overseas include: The Nutcracker (Ballet Theatre Queensland, Brisbane), The Wiz(Barre Theatre Co., Sydney) and West Side Story (Barre Theatre Co., Sydney).

DANCE EDUCATION PROGRAMS
  • REGULAR CLASSES

The Danceworx has regular classes for 9 months of the year. In these students are taught the dance vocabulary of one particular style.The dance instruction program is divided into 7 levels ranging from Beginners to Advanced.Students advance from one level to another based on clearly specified requisites within the syllabus. The class works on balance, turns and extensions relating specifically to jazz. It also teaches basic musicality and physical, choreographic and rhythmic dynamics.

  • SUMMER / WINTER WORKSHOPS

Twice a year, The Danceworx conducts 6-week workshops,, where every student is taught and given an opportunity to perform on stage in front of a live audience. The workshops are open to everyone and all those taking part get an opportunity to perform on stage. The key is to have fun and build self-confidence.

Dance curriculum 
  • In regular classes, more of technique and less performance skills is taught.
  • At the workshops, more performance skills and less technique is taught.

Technique and performance ability are equally important believes the team. The Danceworx academic year is divided into 4-1/2 months of regular class, 1-1/2 months of workshop & performance followed by another 4-1/2 months of regular class and 1-1/2 months of workshop and performance.The focus is to teach the particular dance language at a certain level and then get the students to practice and present in front of a live audience.

Dance Styles
  • Jazz and Funk Jazz

A stylised combination of street funk, hip-hop and pop.

  • Lyrical Jazz                                                                                                 

Typified by lyrical movement this form is slow and expressive with an emphasis on technique: adagio / floor / barre & center.

  • Theatre Jazz / Broadway Jazz

Includes choreographic styles of various Broadway choreographers who have choreographed musicals.

  • Contemporary

There is a strong emphasis on natural movement with a focus on center and fluidity in movement. Workouts may vary to include Yoga. The movement philosophy is based on natural elements and the art of combining these to work in collusion with the body.

  • Classical Ballet

Provides a sound grounding in basic ballet positions and movements.

  • Social Dance

The class is basically about teaching students enough to able to go out dancing and have a great time.
