Discover Year

Life is full of changes of seasons and times of transition. One of the most significant transitions in my life has been my change in career over the last 5 years. I was trained as a Registered Physiotherapist, and practiced in the profession for two years before transitioning to a career I truly love and resonate with. This transition hasn’t always been easy. I experienced times of denial, of painful realization, and times of uncertainty, when my schooling had always provided me the comfort of knowing where I would be and when. And school is something I truly love, so it was simple to be surrounded by a stable environment I was familiar with. But the realization that physiotherapy was not my life’s passion was exactly the prompt I needed to launch into an exploration of what I do love and how I want to make decisions in my life going forward. After taking time to reflect on my strengths and my inclinations, I discovered there were clear signs my heart gave me about where my purpose in life lies. Conversations that make me lean in, topics I could read and write about for hours, and ideas that excite and inspire me all led me to the conclusion that my desire is to be a counsellor. Specifically, a career counsellor. I am fuelled by meaningful conversations about where individuals find their hearts drawn to and how they can make intentional choices in their lives and be led by their desires. When I study, grow and practice in this field, there is a deep knowing that this is exactly where I want to be. I don’t have the language yet to describe this in full, as I think it’s something that’s best experienced.

My circumstances this fall led me to connect with Jay Gosselin, founder and president of Discover Year in Ottawa. I felt instantly connected to Jay’s energy and his concept behind Discover Year. I was profoundly drawn to be part of this program. I’m excited to announce that I’m the Regional Chief Mentor of the Discover Year program launching in Toronto this year! Discover Year is a gap year program that is run by a loving, passionate team and fills a crucial need in today’s society. It offers students an accepting, exploratory community in which they grow, connect, discover their interests and strengths and pursue significance. The origin of the word significance comes from the Latin words for meaning, force and energy. These are powerful words that begin to describe a journey of purpose and direction. Discover Year gives young people the tools to passionately embark on this journey with curiosity and an inspiring support system at their side. I’m thrilled to begin to engage with Discover Year participants this year in a way that challenges them to deepen their understanding of their strengths, passions and who they want to be in this world. I believe everyone’s path is unique, powerful and worth exploring with awareness, presence and intention. I’m so honoured to be acting as Regional Chief Mentor with Discover Year Toronto, and can’t wait to share updates with you as 2018 unfolds!
