The world ruler is dead, technology foundational to their society destroyed, and Safara is on the brink of collapse. Half-human, half-alien Eros is the rightful heir to the world throne, but before he can return to the capital, he’s abducted by a rebel group of humans who call themselves The Remnant–and won’t release him until he swears to help them overthrow the very government he’s inheriting. With Eros missing, ex-queen Kora is determined to stave off mad grabs for the throne. But as royalty from across the territories flock to the capital, and a new charismatic candidate takes the spotlight, Kora sets off into the desert with a skilled prince-turned-bounty hunter to find Eros before it’s too late for both the future king and his kingdom.

And here’s the guest post from Ava Jae!
When you wrote BEYOND THE RED, did you intend for there to be a sequel?
From the start, I absolutely intended Beyond the Red to be the first book of a trilogy—I knew that from day one of first drafting back in 2013, well before I’d figured out how the story arc of the trilogy would end. But I was also keenly aware of the fact that I may not be able to sell Beyond the Red as a series at first, which is ultimately what ended up happening. Beyond the Red sold as a standalone and I was told my publisher wanted to see how that went before considering more books, which I was fine with.
Throughout that waiting period of not knowing if I’d get to finish the series, though, I really wanted to finish the whole story, so you can imagine my delight when my publisher picked up the second and third books. Knowing at long last I’d be able to tell Kora and Eros’s whole stories was such a relief and such a joy.
I didn’t, however, initially know exactly how the series would go. I had a very specific end point for the trilogy, but I didn’t really have a clear idea of how to get there—and I didn’t figure it out until time came to get the proposal ready for my publisher, and even then my ideas for the third book were pretty nebulous until I sat down and plotted it out over this spring then wrote it over the summer (four years after I started first drafting Beyond the Red!). Now that I’m working on the third book there’s some relief in finally knowing exactly where the story goes and where it ends—and that’s pretty darn cool. J
