My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier

An Orphaned Philip Ashley is raised by his bachelor cousin Ambrose. When Ambrose goes to Italy and gets married everyone is shocked to hear this man who dislikes female company has committed himself to a woman. But his marriage soon causes confusion and suspicion when the letters he writes home to Phillip suggest a darker side to the relationship. Then he dies, and Phillip’s cousin Ashley comes to stay in England. Is she sweet and innocent or is there more to her than she is letting on?

Like her other novels, du Maurier’s My Cousin Rachel is a dark, twisted and mysterious novel. And, as usual, du Maurier leaves you questioning and waiting for the truth throughout the novel, changing your mind and second guessing characters and their motives. In particular, the intriguing entity of Cousin Rachel will have you thinking she’s good one minute and then being suspicious of her every act the next.

While this novel begins fairly slowly, it did eventually pick up with a climatic and fast-paced ending. It may take some time to get into the rhythm of the book but the revelations and twists will keep you gripped to the end to find out the truth.
