One by One

It’s been a crazy week. We went back and forth between cold and hot weather. To be honest, I prefer the heat. Everyone here thinks I’m crazy but I like it. A piece of exciting news is that Sister Alexander has asked Sister Lowry and I to join the Colfax district in performing a musical number for the conference with Elder Cook in March. So in practicing and coordinating for that, I’ve gotten to see a lot of Sister Stearns, Elder Liddell, and even Sister Hill (who was in the MTC with me). It’s been great! And I’m really excited for Elder Cook to come. I know it will be an amazing experience.

This week one of the highlights was a very inspiring zone meeting we had on Wednesday. The theme fell in line with the special musical number that Elder Momotaro and I were asked to sing. It is the song written by Elder Bednar and Paul Cardall called “One by One”. I thought it was a very touching song and I wanted to share some of the lyrics.

“One by one, one by one.

Christ looked around Him and saw their tears.

One by one, one by one.

In His compassion, He calmed their fears.

Jesus Christ healed each one brought forth unto Him.

Then He blessed each precious child and prayed for them.

The angels descended from heaven above,

Encircling those little ones; each felt His love.

One by one, one by one.

He intercedes for each daughter and son.

One by one, one by one.

Strength from His grace gives us pow’r to become,

One by one.”

It reminded me of a powerful talk from this last conference. Elder Nattress shared a message about how the gospel is about the “one”.

“The gospel truly is about the one. It is about one lost sheep; it is about one Samaritan woman at a well; it is about one prodigal son.

And it is about one little boy who might claim he is not listening.

It is about each one of us—as imperfect as we may be—becoming one with the Savior as He is one with His Father.”

I really came to realize this during a moment I had this week. We were having a particularly challenging day. All of our appointments had fallen through and no one was home (which happens a lot on a mission…) and we headed to our appointment with Matt (our recent convert). So we were talking with him and he was sharing some of the insights he’d had from listening to conference talks that week. And we actually ended up having a very spiritual conversation and the spirit was really strong. And I just stopped for a second and I realized that the rest of the day could’ve been terrible, but what really mattered was that moment. And I realized that if I’ve accomplished nothing else in this area, at least I was able to touch one person.

It was a powerful reminder that it’s about the one. Just like Heavenly Father loves each of us individually, we can reach out, help, and comfort one by one. I hope all of you have a fantastic week and continue to feel God’s love for you.
