I must admit that I got preeeeeetty excited when I saw that Holly Black had released a new book. I’m not sure why either, considering I haven’t LOVED any of her books in the past. What I do love though, is how her fae creatures are always so nasty and tricksy and magical.
“The Cruel Prince” follows Jude who lives in the High Court of Faerie with her twin sister and two other siblings. They live there because Judes’ parents were murdered by her mothers ex-faerie-husband, in front of them, in their human house, in human land. Then Jude and her twin sister, and her older sister (who is the daughter of the ex-faerie-husband) all go with the ex-faerie-husband to live in faerie land. Which is weird, because fast forward time to when they’re all teenagers and they’re quite happily just living with him and have accepted him as their father figure and the fact that he SLAUGHTERED THEIR PARENTS doesn’t seem like such a big deal to them??
Anyway, I don’t want to spoil the story but there are evil plots and sneaky plans and Jude isn’t the most reliable character which is something I always enjoy in a novel. Overall, I do think this would be more enjoyable for young adults (I feel so old now), because I kept finding flaws that really bugged me. Jude didn’t really have a personality and there was absolutely no chemistry between her and her twin sister and Jude thought of herself as way more badass than she actually was. I do like where the story is going though, the ending definitely caught my attention, and I will be keeping an eye out for the sequel!
