review 1: 3.5 stars but that option doesn't appear on mobile site. What's present here is worth reading. He could have written at least a couple of books judging by what in this diary, which I assume was not rewritten or edited by him; straight from the hip. The large "lost" portions (some multi-year's worth) are suspiciously the parts/years everyone wants to read; Le Scandale, the end of each marriage and did this man never hear of rehab or AA? Me thinks the juiciest parts are missing cuz someone dumped em. Too coincidental otherwise. Still, plenty here. My god they knew everyone. What comes across nicely is the depth of his love for Liz. Not so much subsequent wives. Also lots of fun are his views on others in the movie biz; hilarious and brutal. Of the people he liked/admired, he... more made it sound like people I'd like to have known. What he also dscribes well is the effect he & Liz had on other people. Glad I read it but it won't be read again by me.
review 2: Fascinating to look into the mind and daily recordings of a man as bright, generous, and morose as Richard Burton. A voracious reader, he apparently was also interested in food for he documents his daily meals along with glimpses of the "drunks" of Hollywood and royalty. However, it's also a truly sad book about a soulful love between he and Liz Taylor that went sour - probably because both of them drank themselves into oblivion at times. less
