review 1: I was overwhelmed with emotion through this entire book. If someone asked me what book I would recommend for reading, this would be the one. I live in Tacoma, which is about 45 minutes from Bremerton and I know Tacoma has a huge homeless population and of course Seattle does too. I did not know Bremerton did too. Richard LeMieux puts faces to the homeless and words into their mouths. It is a heartbreaking story. But the fact that he has written this book and he and the book are truly making a difference around all of the United States is amazing. This book should be on everyone's reading list. This book should be handed to every government official clear up to the president. Willow and Richard have touched my life and I hope they keep opening doors until the homeless are ... morenot homeless anymore. This is a must read.
review 2: It's hard to put a finger on exactly why I enjoyed this book so much. It could be the thread strung skillfully throughout the book to weave the message that homeless people are people too; each entitled to the same dignity and respect the non-homeless are. It might be the skillful characterization of a dog named Wonder. A dog who stuck by her owner through thick and thin, even when his own family shunned him. She never permitted him to retreat into the depression that would have claimed him were it not for her presence. Perhaps it's the author's struggle with depression juxtaposed against his determination to keep trudging on day after day. Initially, he does this for Wonder alone. But as time goes on, he also resists the siren call of suicide for the homeless people who befriend him and slowly but surely reveal to him that he does have a purpose in this life: to portray the homeless as nothing more or less than what they are.It should surprise no one that the homeless are exactly like everyone else. Sadly, based on some of the true stories related in this promising debut, it would surprise more people than you'd ever expect. Or care to remember. less
