review 1: I wouldn't call this issue of The Best American Essays 'best.' Most of the essays in here are blandly composed, surviving simply by intriguing topics. In some cases, like "Epilogue: Deadkidistan," the topic of the essay should move the reader, evoke in them a profound sense of grief held at bay only by the simplest joys. Instead, the author clumsily tells the story as though she's in a support group: big buzz words that attempt to reflect a real human experience, but only put that experience with the overflowing abundance of substance-less dribble. That description does not apply to all essays, though. Some enraptured me. Some made me feel the author's experience deep in my gut. Here's a list of my favorites from the issue:"The Girls in My Town""His Last Game""Some Notes on... more Attunement""Channel B""The Book of Knowledge"
review 2: This collection is dominated by the kind of personal narrative that is very close to memoir. Creative non-fiction. Something like that anyway. Some of them are beautiful and moving, while others are more humorous. All of them are shadowed by various gradations of darkness. I wished there'd been one without that shadow. Still, all of the essays in this collection are beautifully written and compelling. less
