review 1: Ralph Truitt: 54 y/o lonely man. 1907 Wisconsin winter. Puts ad in for a "reliable wife." Catherine comes...w/ an unknown past. Ralph tells her his whole story: wife whom he gave everything-she took a lover-had a son. Ralph sent her away and she died. He beat the son (not his) Antonio until he ran away.They marry. Ralph wants Cath to go to St. Louis and bring Antonio back. We find out she and Antonio were lovers and planned for her to go and kill Ralph. She's now reluctant to but goes home and starts giving him arsenic. Ralph knows and doesn't care. Then she changes her mind and nurses him to health. Antonio comes. He tries to seduce, then rapes her. Ralph sees, they fight, Antonio falls thru ice and dies. Cath confesses but Ralph knew anyway. "such things happen."Very ero... moretic prose but left me sorta "cold"
review 2: You shouldn't like this book. The main characters are deceitful and out for revenge. They are callous, and you don't learn why they are so hard until well into the story. You should have thrown the book against the wall early on, but you kept reading for the sex. Those passages are sensual and titillating without being pornographic. So it's the lurid details that keep you reading. You probably skip over the descriptions of luxurious furniture and clothing, even find the beautiful, secret garden ho-hum. But sex happens often. Even the middle-aged main character can have sex every night, to continual heights of passion. You shouldn't like this book. But you do. less
