review 1: I had never heard of Robin Romm until I picked this book up on a whim during a trip to the library. I found her writing style similiar to Sarah Selecky; short stories -- or in Romm's case, chapters -- focused on the emotion and dialogue of a slice in time. While Romm's chronicles her mother's declining health in a three-week span, she focuses on capturing the mundane details of everyday life that colour that period of time. This creates a raw, unguarded feel to the story. After reading this memoir, I'm looking forward to reading her collection of short stories.
review 2: I came across this book as the anniversary of my mother's death approached. One week after I started it my healthy independent 89 year old aunt suffered a stroke and decided that it was time to... more pass from this life to the next. Two weeks later she made that journey. The hospice people who assisted both my mother and her sister were caring and helpful, quite unlike the obstinate nurse in Romm's book. I cannot imagine being on the verge of death for 10 years. less
