review 1: Sachi Parker's story is heartbreaking. This is not a Mommy Dearest bitchfest. It is a sadder-but-wiser story of a child growing up with two parents who nearly always put their own interests above hers, who pretty much left her on her own to raise herself, who was often judged very harshly by both parents. I believe Sachi Parker. She doesn't get nasty, she just tells her story from her point of view. I will never feel the same way about Shirley MacLaine again. Never. I hope Sachi's life is one filled with love, peace and happiness today. She deserves it.
review 2: In this wonderfully blunt memoir, the daughter of Shirley MacLaine paints a picture bleak with parental shortcomings, relationships gone awry, and opportunities missed. On the other hand, the my... moreriad experiences Parker collects may be as profound and instructive as one might ask for in one lifetime. Her mother comes across at once as an astute observer of the human and other races, and as mysteriously naive and clueless in the same vein. Her father, Hollywood producer Steve Parker, is beyond negligent to the point of criminality and worth the read alone. Overall this is a testament to the fallibility and insecurity of human existence, in particular egocentric idiosyncratic behavior. less
